Darsana

Presently, the installed Deities here are Śrī Śrī Gaura-Nitāi and mother Jāhṇavā. The place where Nityānanda Prabhu had dāna-khanda līlā with Dāsa Gadādhara and his associates is present there. The old altar of mādhavī creeper is still standing as a witness till today. The worshipable Deity of Dāsa Gadādhara, Śrī Gopāla is worshiped in the temple. Gopeśvara Śiva is also present here.

PASTIMES

Dāsa Gadādhara was the companion of Nityānanda Prabhu when He was directed by Śrīman Mahāprabhu to go to Gaudadeśa and preach Kṛṣṇa consciousness there. He was the divine empowered manifestation of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. Here in his house, Nityānanda Prabhu was absorbed in the topic of Krsna’s dāna-līlā (pastime of charging tax).

It is described in ‘Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata (Antyakhaṇḍa, 5/374-379,382 and 387):

śrī-bāla-gopāla-mūrti tāna devālaya
āchena parama-lāvaṇyera samuccaya

dekhi’ bāla-gopālera mūrti manohara
prīte nityānanda lailā vakhṣera upara

ananta hṛdaye dekhi’ śrī-bāla-gopāla
sarva-gaṇe hari-dhvani karena viśāla

huṁkāra kariyā nityānanda-malla-rāya
karite lāgilā nṛtya gopāla-līlāya

dāna-khaṇḍa gāyena mādhavānanda ghoṣa
śuni’ avadhūta-siṁha parama santoṣa

bhāgyvanta mādhvera hena kaṇṭha-dhvani
śunite āviṣṭa haya avadhūta-maṇi *******

dāna-khaṇḍa līlā śuni’ nityānanda rāya
ye nṛtya karena tāhā varṇana nā yāya ******

ye-dike cāhena nityānanda prema-rase
sei-dike strī-puruṣe kṛṣṇa-rase bhāse

A most effulgent Deity of Śrī Bāla-gopāla was there in his temple. Nityānanda saw the charming Bāla-gopāla Deity and took Him upon His chest. Everyone saw Śrī Bāla-gopāla upon the chest of Ananta and they started chanting loudly the name of Hari. Nityānanda-malla-rāya roared loudly and started dancing in the mood of a cowherd boy. Mādhavānanda Ghoṣa sang about the dāna-līlā (song describ- ing Kṛṣṇa’s dāna-līlā or pastime of charging tax) and the lion like Avadhūta became very satisfied. The very sweet voice of the fortunate Mādhava made the crest jewel of Avadhūta absorbed in ecstasy. It was beyond description the dance performed by Lord Nityānanda while He heard topics of dāna-līlā. Nityānanda cast His glance filled with mellows of love in all directions and all men and women floated in the mellows of love for Kṛṣṇa.

Thus, Nityānanda Prabhu fulfilled his desire by staying over some days in the temple of Gadādhara Dāsa. Gadādhara Dāsa was very powerful. The house of yavana Kazi was situated near the house of Gadādhara Dāsa. One day he went to the Kazi’s house and asked, ‘Where is the Kazi?’ Kazi was inside the house at that time. Kazi said, ‘Who has the audacity of calling me by name?’ Kazi came out from the house and saw Gadādhara Dāsa. Then he asked him, ‘Why have you come here?’ Gadādhara Dāsa replied, ‘Gaurāṅga and Nityānanda descended to this earth to deliver all the living entities by giving Kṛṣṇa’s name. You are only left out. Now, you take the name of Hari.’ The Kazi was pacified and told him, ‘Now you go back home. I will chant the name of Hari from tomorrow. I will say Hari tomorrow.’

It is described in the Caitanya-bhāgavata (Antyakhaṇḍa, 5/409)-

gadādhara dāsa bale – ‘āra kāli kene’
ei ta’ balilā ‘hari’ āpana badane

Gadādhara Dāsa said, ‘Why tomorrow?’ Just now you have uttered the name of ‘Hari’.

“Now there is nothing inauspiciousness in you. I take all your responsibilities. By saying this, Gadādhara Dāsa started dancing. In this way he made the notorious Kazi into an exclusive devotee.
