HISTORY

How to Reach?

ŚĀSTRA PRAMĀṆA

This is described in Śrī Caitanya- bhāgavata (Antya-khaṇḍa, 5/110) –

tave prabhu āilena barāhanagare
mahā bhāgyavanta eka brāhmaṇera ghare

Prabhu came to the house of a very fortunate brāhmaṇa at Barāhanagara.

ŚRĪ CAITANYA MAHĀPRABHU’S VISIT

In 1436 Śakābda while Mahāprabhu came to Bengal in pretence for going to Vṛndāvana, He went upto Kānāi-nāṭaśālā and He came to Barāhanagara on the way back to Purī again. At that time Śrī Raghunātha Vipra recited Bhāgavata in a very sweet voice.

This has been described in Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata (Antya- khaṇḍa, 5/112-113,117,119-120)-

śuniyā tāhāna bhakti-yogera paṭhana
āviṣṭa hailā gauracandra nārāyaṇa

‘bala bala’ bale prabhu śrī gaurāṅga-rāya
huṅkāra garjana prabhu karaye sadāya

eimata rātri tinaprahara-abadhi
bhāgavata śuniyā nācila guṇa-nidhi

prabhu bale – bhāgavata emata paḍite
kabhu nāhi śuni āra kāhara mukhete

eteke tomāra nāma ‘bhāgavatācārya’
ihā vinā āra kona nā kariha kārya

When Gauracandra Nārāyaṇa heard his recitation of verses glorifying devotional service, He was absorbed in ecstasy. Lord Gaurāṅga repeatedly roared loudly, “Go on reading! Go on reading.” In this way, the Lord, who is an ocean of transcendental qualities, danced for nine hours that night while hearing Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. The Lord said, “I have never heard such a nice explanation of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam from anyone. I therefore designate you Bhāgavata Ācārya. You do not have any other duty except reciting Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.

Mahāprabhu was very pleased by hearing his nice recitation of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and He designated him as Bhāgavata Ācārya. He advised him to recite Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam only and he should not do any other service. Raghunātha became a very renowned Vaiṣṇava by translating Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam in poetry form in Bengali. The name of the book is ‘Śri Kṛṣṇaprema Taraṅginī’.
